DONE
It took one more trip to Knoxville
to get the rest of the stuff for Christmas.
Bought a compressor and nail gun for Joe,
thought, maybe he could work a little easier.
Got some paints and art supplies for Irene,
figured you can't let talent like hers go to waste.
Then got down to business.
Took two hours to find a big enough box
of Godiva Chocolates, some candles,
Champagne and something else.
Looked everything over,
nodded his head, said "Done."
THE REAL THING
On Christmas Eve,
Sam, Joe, and Irene
celebrated at Louise's house.
Sam read from the Gospel of Luke
and everyone listened
to his soft voice,
No room in the inn,
wise men, shepherds and angels,
the Child and manger
painted there in the glowing embers
of the fireplace,
exchanged gifts in remembrance
of Him,
everybody smilin'.
A little prayer
and then the presents.
ohs and ahs over the stuff,
Irene's watercolors,
Joe's mats and frames
Louise cried over the poem
and hid her chocolate
while Sam put on his new chaps.
Good music, a few dances
in the shreds of paper
then some wine and cheese,
good crusty bread,
before some satisfied cuddlin'
the rest of the night away.
Sam couldn't sleep
waitin' for tomorrow.
CHRISTMAS
Christmas day finally came
and Sam didn't let on.
Waited 'til after breakfast was done
and the kitchen cleaned,
said, "Gotta go feed the stock."
He was gone about an hour and a half
when they heard him come back.
Came through the door,
grabbed Louise's hand,
said' "close your eyes baby."
took her outside, picked her up
and set her on the Sportster
he'd found in the paper.
She squeeled and jumped all over that boy,
hopped up and down,
kissed him about ninety-two times
then ran inside to get changed and a helmet on.
Sam told her it wasn't new,
but he'd done all the service,
and "don't she just purr."
It was too cold to go far,
so when they got back
took 'em about twenty minutes
by the fire to get their fingers to stop hurtin'.
Did that three more times before the day was over.
That's one of the things Sam loves about Louise,
sometimes, she just can't seem to get enough.
